Skin Care During Pregnancy Pregnancy can tough on you and your skin. Hormones bring huge changes to almost every part of your body, not just the bits that show, you will find changes to your teeth and gums, feet, hair and skin. You may need to give your skincare routine a bit of an overhaul to keep your skin in top condition and make sure your skin feels great right through your pregnancy. First of all check the products you normally use. You may find some of them are not suitable for your skin while you are pregnant. Even if the skin products you are used to using are suitable during pregnancy, bear in mind that they may not be suitable for your pregnancy, your skin may change and need something different. If you notice you skin becomes more dry or greasy than usual switch your usual creams and lotions to something else. Feed and protect your skin. Try using a moisturising body wash in the shower instead of soap, and although frequent long soaks in the bath are very tempting when you are pregnant, remember that this can de-hydrate your skin, so invest in a good moisturising bath soak and try and get both bath and shower products that are moisturising and pH balanced. Your whole skin cycle is accelerated during pregnancy so make sure you regularly exfoliate and moisturise to keep your skin healthy and well fed. A good easy method for this is to use a moisturising body wash with a pair of ‘shower mitts’ they are cheap, quick to use and effective. Then use a moisturising body lotion afterwards, pump action dispensers are easy and quick so you are more likely to use it daily and counteract the drying effects of water. Pay particular attention to your face and hands during pregnancy as skin pigmentation can change during this time. You may find you burn much more easily so make sure you have a product with UV filters for your face and hands. You may find that your skin becomes much oilier that you are used to, if so it is a good idea to invest in a good quality facial cleanser to keep your skin clear. The skin around your growing bump is obviously going to be under ‘growing’ pressure during your pregnancy. There is a whole host of products available for use on your tummy during pregnancy, try and choose one that will keep the skin supple and elastic in the areas you need. Massage type gels can be soothing and relaxing while doing the job. Don’t forget your tired and swollen feet, even
if you get to the stage where you can’t see them! A soak followed
by a foot gel will really refresh you and your feet at the end of
the day, obviously try and get someone else to apply this if possible
to make sure you get the maximum benefit!!
